LSA Director takes Silver!

LSA Technology Systems Director Steve Rosser was recently a member of the British Microlight team who took the silver medal at the European Microlight Championships, held in Nagykanisza, Hungary.

The British team won the Silver medal for overall team performance, and individual crews won one Silver and one Bronze medal, from a field of 60 crews from all over Europe. Countries represented were: Britain, Spain, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, Slovakia, France, Lithuania, Poland and Belgium.

Flying tasks test crew ability by requiring a variety of flying skills, but at a very high level of accuracy. Navigation routes lasting up to 2 hours will require timing accuracy along the whole route of plus or minus 10 seconds, scores being achieved by flying over unknown and hidden timing gates at the correct time. Landing precision is tested by stopping the engine at 1000 feet height and then landing within a 5 metre box on the runnway. Fuel economy and fuel use predictaion are tested by flying the maximum distance on a fixed amount of fuel, or staying airborne for the maximum duration by using thermals like a glider. Differences of a few seconds, or a few hundred metres differentiate the top crews in the world class competing field.

Steve, a fully qualified pilot himself, is the navigator and flies with pilot Keith Ingham. They fly a Mainair Blade 912 microlight, built in Rochdale by Mainair Sports Ltd. This is a 2 seat flexwing microlight, having good low and high speed performance, and is powered by an 80 hp Rotax 4-cylinder 4-stroke engine, giving great power and excellent fuel economy, all essential capabilities for competitive performance.

Steve and Keith were placed 10th in a very strong field of competitors. This is their fourth year of international competions, their best placing to date being 5th in the World Air Games held in Beas de Segura, Spain, in 2001, when a malfunctioning digital camera robbed them of a Bronze medal.

LSA completes contract in Brazil

LSA Technology has recently completed a contract in Campinas near Sao Paulo, Brazil for a major UK chemical company. The contract covered the project management and software design for the state-of-the-art control system for a manufacturing plant which makes the Lanolin, used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Exterior of the Chemical Plant in Brazil

The contract, started last April , was mostly conducted in the UK, but involved several trips to Brazil, culminating in an intensive 10 week visit while commissioning the plant and control system. The first lanolin batch was successfully completed in late June.

The plant is designed to operate automatically, each manufacturing operation being initiated by an operator, after which the computer systems open & close valves, start & stop pumps, etc, as required to complete the operation. The whole plant and operation status is conveyed to the operators in the form of 'mimics', which display schematic representations of the plant, using animation and colours to show what is going on. the operator can control the operation via the same mimics.

A vital part of the control system is to monitor the whole plant for faults, and to take the appropriate safety action should any be detected. In general, this means that a potentially dangerous situation can be brought under control, the plant made safe, and the situation reported to the operators, before the operators are even aware that there is a problem.

For the technically minded, the control system used Rockwell ControlLogix PLC plant controllers, and the operator interface (MMI) used the Wonderware InTouch system running on PCs.

LSA Technology have previously handled similar contracts for plant control systems in Singapore and the USA, as well as many in the UK.
